When you hear THC, it is most likely referring to delta-9 THC, the major cannabinoid abundant in marijuana plants. What many people are unfamiliar with is a potentially revolutionizing alternative compound called delta-8 THC.

Despite being similar in chemical structure and name, there are some key differences in delta-8 THC that set it apart from delta-9 THC.

Chemical structure

Delta-8 and delta-9 THC are similar in their chemical characteristics and their names. Both forms of THC bind to the body’s endocannabinoid system. In delta-9, the double covalent bond (that gets you “high”) lies in the ninth carbon. In delta-8, the double bond exists in the eighth carbon–hence, the numbers. The different double bond location on delta-8 explains why it is less potent. Delta-8 elicits very similar effects to delta-9 with less potency and less anxiety or paranoia.

Delta-9 and delta-8 are both analogues of THC. Often, when THC is brought up in conversation, people are referring to delta-9 THC.

Will delta 8 get you high?

Delta-9 THC is known to have much stronger and more rapid effects while delta-8 THC provides a more mellow, smooth experience. Although this difference in potency may seem like an unwanted trade-off to some, delta-8 THC also deviates in terms of harmful side effects. While delta-9 THC is known to produce stronger side effects of paranoia, anxiety, mental fog, and more, delta-8 THC users have reported lower levels of these negative repercussions and higher levels of calmness and clarity without compromising a good high.

But is it legal?

Furthermore, the extraction process of delta-8 THC makes it legal in places delta-9 is not. Because of the 2018 Farm Bill, cannabis plants containing more than .3% delta-9 THC is illegal under federal law. However, this means that there is no limit on delta-8 THC compounds, making it federally legal to have more delta-8 THC components in products within states that don’t have additional restrictions.

In short, the key differences are the potency of effects, overall experience, and legality of products. Users should also note that due to the stricter restrictions of delta-9 THC, it is safe to say that delta-8 products are projected to have much more production potential and ultimately, accessibility.
